Tesco staff and customers raise £7.2 million
Thursday 07 April 2011
Tesco staff and customers have raised a record £7.2 million to help leading children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent, Tesco Charity of the Year 2010, pioneer new ways of caring for children with cancer.
The UK’s largest annual corporate charity partnership, which ended in February 2011, has exceeded all expectations to raise the highest income it has ever recorded, substantially surpassing the original fundraising target of £5 million.
Every day, 10 children in the UK are told they have cancer. Although survival rates are over 70%, cancer remains the single largest cause of death from disease in children in the UK.
The incredible sum raised will help fund CLIC Sargent specialist nurses at every children’s cancer centre across the UK3. The nurses will act as key workers and coordinate all the children’s care in hospital and in the community. This will change the way children are cared for and allow them to spend more time at home and less time in hospital.
